Using public transport

Transport options

FRAM offers public transport by bus, express boat and ferry in Møre and Romsdal.

AtB is responsible for the express boat called Kystekspressen (The Coastal Express) from Kristiansund to Trondheim. You can find AtB's website here.

Fare zones and ticket prices

Møre and Romsdal is divided into various fare zones. The number of zones you travel through determines the ticket price. You can find the zone map for Møre og Romsdal here.


When you buy a ticket marked with FRAM on a bus, express boat or ferry, you enter into a contract for transport within Møre and Romsdal based on FRAM's travel conditions. You can find an overview of available ticket types here and information about prices.

You can buy tickets right on your mobile using the FRAM app, on board the bus, express boat and ferry, or by visiting the bus stations, Kristiansund traffic terminalMolde traffic terminal and Moa traffic terminal. In addition, you can buy period tickets and add credit in the online store and add it to your travelcard.

Transit ticket and transfer

You can buy a combined ticket from FRAM for travelling over longer distances by bus, called a transit ticket. You can also continue using the ticket in the last zone shown on the ticket, as long as the ticket has not expired (usually within 60 minutes after the time of arrival). We call this transfer. Note! The ticket is not valid for the return on a longer journey, even if the time on the ticket has not expired.

Penalty fares

All passengers are responsible for possessing a valid ticket and the relevant supporting documentation for a discounted ticket. If you are not in possession of a valid ticket and supporting documentation in a ticket check, you will be required to pay a NOK 500 penalty fare in addition to the ticket, when paying on the spot. If billed after the fact, the penalty fare is increased to NOK 750.

Regulations and rights

Transport regulations for scheduled bus routes in Norway apply to passengers. Approved by The Ministry of Transportation and Communication, 27 February 2004. You can find the General Transport Regulations here.

The EU has adopted a regulation regarding your rights as a bus passenger. You can find the short version with information about the EU regulations and bus passenger rights here (in Norwegian only).

If you disagree with the outcome of a complaint submitted to and reviewed by the FRAM Customer Centre after travelling on public transport, you can submit the complaint to the national complaints board. Your complaint must be sent to the board within four weeks after receiving a reply from the FRAM Customer Centre. You can find more information and contact the Travel Complaint Handling Body here.

Travelling in a larger group

To maintain a great public transport service for those travelling within the county, we ask those planning to travel in large groups to let us know well beforehand. Note! Before 12.00 the day before your journey at the latest.

It will make it easlier to plan the departures so that nobody who are travelling with public transport are left behind, waiting for the next available departure.

We need to know the number of passengers, what route you would like to travel with and the expected departure. Notify the FRAM Customer Centre using the inquiry form or by telephone +47 71 28 01 00.

We recommend kindergartens to bring a child seat to the kindergarten children who normally use this. There are seat belts in all buses except from city buses.

It is not possible to reserve the space on board the buses, express boats and the ferries to a larger group.

Baggage rules on buses

We ask those who travel by bus to think of their fellow passengers and follow the applicable rules for baggage.

Here is an excerpt of the regulations set by The Ministry of Transport and Communications:

§ 9 Hand baggage

Passengers are allowed to convey easily managed items (hand baggage) with a total weight of up to 20 kg for each ticket. The baggage must be placed in such a way that it does not annoy other passengers or prevent entry and exit.

§ 10 Other baggage

Upon payment, heavy or large items or baggage may be conveyed to the extent that space allows, and the service staff deem it safe. Such items are to be placed according to service staff instructions. Prams may be brought on board to the extent that space allows and must be placed according to service staff instructions.

Wheelchairs rules on buses

FRAM buses are designed according to universal design requirements. For safety reasons there are some limitations regarding the size and weight of wheelchairs that can be brought on board buses. The size and weight allowed correspond to electric wheelchairs that are commonly used.

Note! You are responsible for keeping within the limits, and be aware that the wheelchair can not join the bus if the dimensions are greater.

These are the limits:

  • A wheelchair's length cannot exceed 120 cm, the width cannot exceed 70 cm, and the height cannot exceed 109 cm. These measurements are without a person
  • The total weight including a person cannot exceed 250 kg
  • Electric wheelchairs must have a maximum speed of 10 km/h

Rules for dogs and cats

Dogs can travel on board all buses, it is also allowed to travel with a cat in a cage. You can find the conditions for travelling with dogs on FRAM Express routes here.

Dogs and cats on express boats need to be transported in their own cage/crate if they are to be in the lounge aboard the express boat. If not, animals are to remain in the designated area outside the lounge, indicated by the crew. These rules are to ensure that animals do not come in contact with chairs, blankets or similar items in the lounge in consideration of allergy sufferers and other passengers. These rules do not apply to guide dogs for the blind/visually impaired or to service and police dogs.

Rules for food and beverages on board our buses

We would like all our passengers to have a nice and comfortable bus ride. This means that everyone must show consideration for fellow passengers, also when it comes to food and beverages.

Keep in mind that drinks in cups without a lid can represent a danger for other passengers and that food that smells can cause discomfort. Traces of food and other trash is unpleasant for all travellers.

These food and drink types are not allowed on board

  • Beverages in cups without a lid (both cold and hot drinks)
  • Warm food 
  • Ice cream
  • Potato chips, bacon crisp and similar products

Food and beverages it is OK to bring on board

  • Matpakke" (packed sandwich) with spread that does not have a strong smell
  • Baguette with "dry" filling
  • Beverages in cup with lid
  • Beverages in a bottle with a top
  • Chocolate, candy and similar sweets
  • Fruit 

School day and school holiday

For some bus departures, there might be a different service on a school day than school holiday. It will be marked in the timetable. You can find information about the school calendar here (in Norwegian).

If you use the FRAM app and travel planner to find timetable information, you do not need to think about this. Simply said.

Parents who want information about the timetable times for school buses can contact the school the child attends.

Good travel habits when taking the bus

  • Be visible. Use reflectors, even in streets with street lighting
  • Keep a distance. Keep a distance of at least one meter away from a bus in motion
  • Give a sign. An early and clear sign helps the driver when you want to stop the bus
  • First off, then on. Be polite and have respect for other passengers when boarding and disembarking
  • Be ready. Have the FRAM app, travelcard or other payment ready before boarding
  • Have your ID or documentation you need for discounted tickets ready when boarding
  • Board together. When one person is paying for several passengers, board together
  • Have a valid ticket. Traveling without a valid ticket is embarrassing and can cost you plenty
  • Think safety. Do not walk in the bus while it is motion
  • Use seat belts in the buses that have them and restraint straps for prams
  • Consider other travelers. Avoid high-volume and long telephone conversations on board the bus
  • Please give up your seat to someone who needs it even more than yourself
  • Keep buses tidy. Avoid spilling drinks or food on board
  • Keep your feet on the floor, not in a seat where others are going to sit
  • Show general consideration to your fellow passengers and thank you - it does not take much for everyone to enjoy their journey
