Ålesund: Buses get priority at certain traffic lights
Using new technogy the FRAM buses will automatically get a green light at some of the traffic lights in Ålesund. Shorter waiting time makes it easier to keep the bus on time and helps the bus go faster.
The traffic light prioritization of public transport is one of the first projects to be implemented for Bypakke Ålesund. Technology that uses GPS to recognize the buses and gives them green light has been installed at five traffic lights:
- Posthuskrysset/traffic terminal
- Blixvalen (meieriet)
- Hatlasvingen by Hatlane skole
- The hospital
- Bypakke Ålesund is more than a development project. Giving public transport priority is a simple and cost-effective measure that makes public transport faster, especially in periods of the day with heavy traffic, says project manager Torbjørn Vatnehol in Møre og Romsdal fylkeskommune (Møre and Romsdal county authority).
Together, Møre og Romsdal fylkeskommune, Statens vegvesen and Ålesund municipality have established a plan for the development of the bus transport in Ålesund towards 2030. The plan forms the basis for the work within Bypakke Ålesund, and the goal is to have more people travel by public transport, to decrease the driving time and that travel time for bus should be shorter compared to the travel time with a car.
